For this blog I wanted to share a technique I use when cutting brass on a tool lathe. You will see how easy it is to cut brass with your favorite CNC machine and then take it a step further by using sanding compound on your newly formed parts. This blog will show you how you can use these steps to improve your day-to-day machining by making some beautifully precision cuts
To make these cuts, I start by cutting the blank from the bar stock with my lathe. Then using my milling machine and tool rest I set up a fixture that allows me to turn the blank around at 45 degrees while the chuck holds the part in place. This allows me to get nice clean cuts without having to worry about accidentally hitting the chuck or not turning tight enough, which would result in rough looking cuts
Once finished, I remove the blank from the part and then take it over to my grinder and grind away any burrs left behind by sharpening and cutting operations. This is where it gets interesting because now I have some really nice looking brass parts that have been turned on my lathe! The next step is taking them over
