What is micro drilling? It's really a simple operation: the machine will take a large PCB and drill holes in it. What makes this process so interesting is that you can take a chip and make it smaller than any human could possibly do with their bare hands
So how does one 'micro drill', anyway? You're probably wondering why on earth I would be talking about something so simple as a milling machine right now. Well, if you'd like to understand my motivation behind this article we need only look at one of the most common uses for these machines: micro-milling
Micro-milling involves the use of a milling machine to mill out very small features from chips. This is accomplished by using a tool called an end-mill which has blades that are too small to be seen by the naked eye. The end-mill has two functions: 1) it drills holes; 2) it cuts away excess material near the edge of the workpiece (i.e., when cutting off excess material after drilling).
