In this tutorial we will look at the construction and operation of a homemade sheet metal side blown forge
The design is based on a design by Dave Furst. The forge is made from 1/2 thick steel plate and uses an air cooled fire box, which is designed to run on propane or natural gas. The air cooled fire box allows for constant air flow into the forge even when it is running at full blast
The fire box has two ports on the top, one for air intake, and another for exhaust. These ports are connected with a pipe that runs across the top of the forge and down each side to connect with an elbow on either side of the firebox. This allows us to vent carbon monoxide out of our home if needed without having to worry about having a chimney blocked off or having a leaky flue in our house!
