Alloys are the most useful type of metal〞they can be used to make great tools, products, and weapons. There are many different alloys for different purposes. What alloy should you choose for forging an axe? Let's have a look at some examples
Iron is easy to work with and hardens quickly. It's also resistant to corrosion, which makes it a good choice for bludgeons and hammers. For forging swords or other weapons with a sharp cutting edge, however, you need steel. Steel has carbon in its structure that makes it strong but brittle〞the harder the steel is worked, the sharper its blade becomes. This means that if you want your weapon to last for a long time, you'll have to temper it before using it. To this end, you can use an alloy made from iron and carbon (called steel). The more of each element in the alloy (in this case 10% iron and 90% carbon) determines how hard the blade will be when hardened〞this number is called hardness, and it's measured in units called HV (where V stands for volume).
