The first thing to check is if the metal is cast or forged. Cast iron is easier to work with than iron, because it has a lower melting point. Iron, on the other hand, can be more difficult to work with because it has a higher melting point
If you have a piece of iron and you want to know what type of metal it is, take a magnet and try to pick up some filings from the surface of the metal. If they stick then you have cast iron. If they don't stick then you have an iron object
If you are new to working with metal and haven't worked with any type of metal before then cast iron should be your first choice since it will be easier for you to work with than iron.
