I'm going to tell you a little secret: If you can mill aluminum, you can machine steel. And if you can machine steel, a lot of other things are possible. This is the kind of thinking behind Tesla's new tool, Metal Piston Machining (MPM). It has the ability to create highly functional pistons out of various materials for certain applications
The tool can take on a wide range of materials and dimensions, but it has been designed specifically to work with aluminum pistons. The idea is that the process will allow manufacturers to produce pistons in high volumes quickly and at low cost
The MPM process begins with an injection molding process that creates a precision-fit piston that's then machined down to its final size before being polished. The result is a piston that's stronger than traditional cast iron ones because it has been created using an injection molding process instead of being made from raw materials like cast iron does.
