I have found that a little salt can go a long way when forging. It usually helps eliminate the oxidation process which makes the finished blade of more durable and easier to work with
I am not sure if this is true or not, but I am pretty sure that it is because when I was making my sword I noticed that the first time I used salt (on one of the handles) it seemed to help make the blade harder and more durable
In an attempt to replicate this experience, I tried applying some salt to one of my swords after having already forged it and found that it made it very difficult to work with
It seems like a lot of people use salt in their forging process because they think that it will help remove impurities or make their blade harder, but I don't think this is really the case. No matter how much you apply, you will still have impurities left behind from the initial forging process that may cause rusting issues down the line.
put salt on metal when forging
