The most common type of forging is called hot or cold working. Hot working involves heating the metal to about 1400～F, then hammering it. Cold working involves heating the metal to about 900～F, then hammering it. The two methods produce different results on some metals but not others.

The processes of forging are as below:

3/ The metal may be reheated and reshaped multiple times to achieve the desired shape and properties.
4/ The metal is cooled and hardened by quenching it in water or oil.
The forged metal parts normally need further processed by machining, heat treatment, or other methods to achieve the final desired properties and finish.
