If you are new to forging and have just finished a piece of metal, it is important to finish the piece before it gets too hot. You can use sandpaper or an abrasive disc to remove any rough edges from the surface of the steel
If you are using a disc sander, make sure that it is in a steady position and not spinning rapidly. If possible, use small sections of sandpaper at a time and move slowly across the entire surface of the steel
Sanding also helps remove any rough spots on your newly forged piece of metal without taking away too much material from your creation.
