The Book Forging Meta
We've all read those stories about an Italian book-making artisan who discovered a secret formula for making books out of metal. They're probably full of it, but what if they weren't? What if they had something worthwhile to teach us? It's time to learn more about book forging metal
The man who wrote the book was a blacksmith named Giulliano Fioravanti. He wrote his treatise on how to make a book out of metal in the 1300s and nobody has bothered to translate it into English since then. It's not available online anywhere, and the only copies that exist are in libraries around Europe. This means that even if you could get your hands on one of these books, there's no guarantee that it would be in English translation
There are some other things we know about Fioravanti: he was born around 1330 and died sometime between 1390 and 1410 (he may have been buried near Pisa). He spent most of his life working as a blacksmith in Florence, Italy but also traveled widely throughout Europe as well as Asia where he conducted experiments with
