Metal forge sound, if we could hear it
The metal forge is a machine used to shape and weld metal. It is a relatively simple piece of machinery, but its impact on civilization has been tremendous. The first metal forges were probably simple pots that were heated over an open fire or charcoal, although some ancient civilizations had more sophisticated methods of heating the metal, including using bellows or steam.[1
The earliest documented use of a metal forge was by the Chinese in approximately 1700 BC,[2] followed by the Egyptians in 1550 BC.[3] In addition to making weapons, this technology allowed them to make bronze tools and weapons once they had discovered how to smelt copper ores into ingots.[4
Metal forges have been used throughout history to create many different items, from swords and knives to horseshoes and nails. These early forges evolved into larger versions with more powerful fireplaces that could heat large pieces of iron at once. Because of their size, these forges were capable of producing large volumes of iron at high temperatures (upwards of 1,000 degrees Celsius).[5
