For example, if you forge a blade out of steel and then add a thin layer of carbon steel on it, the blade will become very hard but brittle. If you add another layer of carbon steel on top of that, it will become even harder and tougher. But if you put some copper on top of that, the blade will become softer than before. This is because copper reacts with the carbon in steel and turns it black which makes it less brittle.
