Forged Handprints: A WordPress resource dedicated to the science behind making hand prints, hand and footprints on metal
Handprints on metal are an art form that has been around for centuries. Even though they are often referred to as 'forged prints', they do not bear any resemblance to a real human handprint! The term 'forged' simply means that the artist has shaped the metal using a variety of different tools and techniques
The process starts from scratch with a blank sheet of metal. This can be either an aluminum sheet or a steel plate. The artist then uses an engraving tool to draw out the outline of a person's hand or foot onto the metal surface using a combination of different techniques such as carving and drilling holes into it. After this, he places one or more hand or footprint stamps over each spot where he has carved out his design so that when he applies heat from an oxygen torch, it melts through these stamps and leaves behind what looks like fingerprints on top of his original stamping.
