A boat launch is a concrete structure located at the top of a ramp into which boats can be launched. The term is also used for the launch itself. Boat launches are distinct from marinas (pilings, docks or jetties) which are situated at the mouth of seawater-filled inlets on shorelines
A boat launch is usually found near water that is often shallow and/or subject to strong currents. It may also be used for launching small craft into rivers and streams as well as for other purposes such as fishing or swimming (when not restricted by regulations)
The first known use of this term was in 1872, when it was used by the United States Army Corps of Engineers during its building of the Cumberland River dam and power plant in Nashville, Tennessee. This facility was called Boat Launch No. 1 and it allowed powered boats to pass through while they were being built and tested.[1
The first recorded use of a boat launch in England was in 1730 when James Rumsey constructed a dock on his property at Longford Point on the River Avon near Bristol.[2]
