An anecdotal about the return of the plastic speed feed
Now that you've seen what a plastic speed feed does for your lathe, it's only logical to wonder why anyone would want one. There are two reasons: cost and performance
Cost-wise, a plastic speed feed is significantly cheaper than metal ones. A metal speed feed can cost anywhere from $30 to $100! A metal speed feed is also much more difficult to install on your lathe because it involves taking the tool rest out of the machine and then putting it back in again, which can be tricky at best. A plastic speed feed is just as easy to install as a metal one, but it costs less so that's why people prefer it.
