The Banjo is a long, narrow, flat wooden instrument usually played with a plectrum, which is held between the thumb and forefinger of the right hand, and it is often associated with folk music. The banjo is similar in appearance to a small fretless guitar except for its curved head. It has a very distinctive sound, particularly when played in an open position and struck hard with the nail of the index finger. The body of this instrument consists of a wooden resonator with a hollowed-out center (the "banjolele") from which the strings run outwards to their attached tuning pegs. The neck on most banjos is not fretted because it is usually mounted on an adjustable metal stand called a headstock. The headstock carries one or more tuning machines, which adjust or detune each string's pitch so that it vibrates at the correct frequency and pitch relative to other strings in tune.[1]
