Calculating horsepower for CNC turning is an important first step to determine tool capacity, feed rate and spindle speed. It will also allow you to calculate what size motor you need
Horsepower is a measurement of the mechanical force that can be applied to a rotating element. One horsepower (HP) equals 33,000 foot-pounds per second (ft-lb/s). For example, if a CNC milling machine has a maximum feed rate of 1 million inches per minute (ipm), then the motor that runs it needs to be able to deliver at least 3 HP
To calculate your motor's horsepower rating, multiply its RPM by 3 〞 this will give you the number of HP in the motor. An example would be if your CNC milling machine has an RPM of 100,000 rpm and needs 3 HP from its electric motor, then multiply 100,000 by 3 to get 300,000 RPM and then divide that number by 30 minutes per hour (or 30000) to get 0.03 hp per hour.
