Vertical turning centers and horizontal turning centers are two technologies used to machine wood and plastic parts. These machines are similar, but this blog post will describe why you might want to consider a horizontal CNC turning center over a vertical one when looking for a good machine in 2010
Vertical Turning Center
A vertical turning center (VTC) is a large machine with motors that turn on their own axis. This means that the material being cut can be fed in at any angle, which allows for cutting angles of up to 90 degrees, as long as the feed mechanism can handle it. The material is fed into the VTC via an upper turret, which is usually mounted above the spindle shaft. The material then falls down onto a lower turret before being picked up by an elevator or conveyor system and sent to the next stage of processing by way of another conveyor belt or turntable system. Vertical turning centers can also have multiple spindles mounted on them so that multiple operations can be performed simultaneously, such as machining a part along its length, then machining its width at the same time (known as double-sided machining)
