Turning is a type of machining process in which a workpiece is rotated on a lathe or other tool to achieve a desired shape. The rate of rotation is determined by the size of the machine tool, typically tens to hundreds of revolutions per minute (RPM). A cutting tool such as an end mill or drill bit is fed into the part and rotated at a constant speed called the spindle speed. The spindle may be rotated by hydraulics, pneumatic motors, or a gear system.[1
The workpiece rotates while guided by a guide spindle, which may be stationary or mounted on casters. This allows for more accurate positioning of the part relative to the cutting tool. There are two forms of turning: manual turning, where an operator directly controls how much material is removed from each pass through the workpiece; and CNC turning, where an automated machine controls all aspects of operation via electronics.[2]
