Wondering if a CNC can make turned newel posts? I have seen quite a few of those questions on forums and blogs over the years. In most cases, those people have either done all the research themselves or they had a design, came up with dimensions (i.e. square) and purchased all their materials from an online supplier
The question is usually asked because they have decided to build their own post, but they still need some areas to be cut out by hand. Or they are using a CNC router for other projects, but are not sure if it can do newel posts without having to make custom parts just for them
No matter what your reason is, here's some information about why a CNC can't make turned newel posts without having to modify it first
1) A CNC doesn't have any sort of cutting tools that can do this type of work: The only tool that has enough power to cut through steel is a milling machine which costs thousands of dollars and requires special training to operate properly (and even then not every person can operate one). If you want something similar in terms of quality and price point then check out our blog post about how we made our own d
