Plastic cnc turning is a method of manufacturing plastic pieces in a variety of shapes. Plastic CNC turning works differently from metal CNC turning in that a steel die is used to create the tool path for waterjet cutting. The plastic piece being manufactured is placed on top of a steel base and clamped down. Then the G-Code files are read into the controller, where the machine moves the cutting tool across the surface of the part. While this type of manufacturing is not as widespread as metal cnc turning, it is still popular among small to mid size companies
Plastic cnc turning has many advantages over traditional metal CNC turning such as lower cost, less complex set up, faster production rate, no need for special tools or fixtures, no heat-affected zone (HAZ), and higher accuracy because there are fewer variables affecting quality control during fabrication.
